A gastroenterologist from New York City, Zhi Alan Cheng, has pleaded guilty to multiple counts of rape and sexual abuse involving several hospital patients and acquaintances. Cheng, 35, admitted to filming assaults both at his apartment and at New York-Presbyterian Queens, the hospital where he previously worked. His actions have drawn widespread condemnation, particularly given his position in the medical community.

Cheng is facing a significant prison sentence of 24 years, as announced by Queens Supreme Court Justice Ushir Pandit Durant, with the hearing scheduled for August 28. District Attorney Melinda Katz emphasized the gravity of the offenses, noting that Cheng’s betrayal of his medical oath compounded the horrific nature of his crimes.

The prosecution’s case began when a victim discovered videos of herself and others being assaulted in Cheng’s apartment. Following this revelation, authorities conducted a thorough investigation that uncovered numerous videos and seized various recreational drugs and medical sedatives from Cheng’s possessions.

In total, Cheng faced a 50-count indictment and additional charges later as more victims came forward. Ultimately, he pleaded guilty to four counts of first-degree rape, three counts of first-degree sexual abuse, and entered an Alford plea for another count of sexual abuse.

Katz expressed gratitude to the victim who initially reported the abuse, hoping that this plea could assist all victims in their healing process. A representative from New York-Presbyterian hospital acknowledged the violation of trust caused by Cheng’s actions and reaffirmed their commitment to patient safety.

This case is part of a troubling trend of allegations against prominent medical professionals, which has sparked significant conversations about patient safety and accountability in healthcare settings. Authorities continue urging victims to come forward, aiming for a supportive environment that fosters healing and justice.

While the events surrounding this case are deeply troubling, there is hope that these brave victims coming forward may help prevent future offenses and ensure that the healthcare community remains a safe space for all patients.
