The government has extended the eviction deadline for residents of the Mead Road Public Rental Board (PRB) property, providing families with additional time to secure safe housing. The PRB had initially required tenants to vacate by this month due to safety concerns, with plans for the subsequent demolition of the buildings.
Despite this extension, many families are still grappling with the challenge of finding alternative housing. Housing Minister Maciu Nalumisa reported that only about 30 of the 144 affected families have received assistance thus far. While some families have chosen to relocate to villages, others have moved to different PRB properties. Many residents have also reached out to the Housing Authority for help.
Minister Nalumisa emphasized the government’s commitment to helping around 100 tenants who are still without new housing solutions. “We want to assist them because some of them do not know where to go. We are trying to identify more flats, and some have even requested to be moved to the villages,” he noted.
To support these relocations, the government has set aside a budget of $200,000 for the PRB and has requested additional funds from the Ministry of Finance. This financial backing and the extended timeline reflect the government’s resolve to meet the housing needs of vulnerable families during this critical transition, ensuring that all affected families receive the necessary support as they seek new accommodations. The proactive measures taken showcase a dedication to addressing homelessness and safeguarding residents’ well-being.
