McDonald’s is set to reintroduce its iconic Monopoly game to the U.S. market after a decade-long hiatus, starting October 6th. This beloved promotion encourages customers to revisit the “thrill of the peel” with both classic and new digital game pieces. Utilizing the McDonald’s app, participants can now collect property pieces and win various prizes through digital game play.
This year’s Monopoly game at McDonald’s offers incredible prizes, including vacations, a Winnebago motorhome, and a Lowe’s shopping spree, alongside the chance to win free food or a $1 million cash prize. Each game piece offers a bonus play for players, doubling their chances to win through the app.
Alyssa Buetikofer, McDonald’s USA’s Chief Marketing and Customer Experience Officer, expressed excitement about reintroducing a “core memory” for customers, especially with a modern digital twist. To play, customers can pre-register on the McDonald’s app between September 29 and October 5 to receive bonus rewards points, then order from a selection of more than 30 eligible menu items to receive game pieces. These pieces can be physical, attached to the packaging, or digital, accessible through the app.
The return of the Monopoly game is notable due to its infamous past involving the “McMillions” scam, where Jerome P. Jacobson, a former police officer, fraudulently distributed winning tickets, amassing over $24 million in prizes. Following the arrest of Jacobson and his associates in 2001, a docuseries titled “McMillion$” was released by HBO Max in 2020 detailing the scandal.
This new iteration of the game aims to celebrate nostalgia while ensuring the integrity of the game with increased safeguards. McDonald’s promotion promises excitement and enticing prizes for both new players and long-standing fans eager to relive old memories.
