McDonald’s Meal Deal Extended: What’s Behind the Decision?

McDonald’s is extending its popular $5 meal deal for a few more weeks due to strong consumer demand. According to a memo reported by Bloomberg, the majority of McDonald’s locations in the U.S. have agreed to continue the promotion beyond its original four-week period, which kicked off on June 25.

The meal bundle will be available at about 93% of McDonald’s restaurants across the country, although the duration of the promotion may vary by location, with some set to offer it until August. This decision comes as cash-strapped consumers are feeling the pinch of rising food prices, particularly in fast-casual dining. The bundle has proven effective for McDonald’s, as foot traffic analytics firm Placer.ai reported a significant increase in visits to McDonald’s restaurants shortly after the promotion’s launch.

The success of McDonald’s deal has prompted other fast-casual chains to introduce their own promotions in response. Arby’s has implemented a $9 meal bundle, while Sonic has introduced a permanent $1.99 value menu. Taco Bell recently announced a $7 Luxe Cravings Box alongside its existing $5 Taco Discovery Box and Cravings Value Menu.

In late May, Burger King extended its $5 “Your Way Meal” past the original timeframe of McDonald’s promotion and introduced new menu items under its “Fiery Menu.” Wendy’s has also joined the price-cutting trend with a $3 breakfast bundle and a $5 combo known as the “Biggie Bag.”
