McDonald’s Extends Popular $5 Meal Deal: What It Means for Fast Food Wars

McDonald’s has decided to extend its popular $5 meal deal for a few more weeks. According to a memo cited by Bloomberg, most U.S.-based McDonald’s locations have agreed to prolong the promotion, which initially began on June 25.

The $5 meal deal will remain available at approximately 93% of McDonald’s restaurants across the country, though the extension will vary by location. Some franchises have chosen to continue the offer until August.

As consumers grapple with rising food prices, especially in the fast casual dining sector, this meal deal has proven to be a successful strategy for McDonald’s. Foot traffic data from the analytics firm Placer.ai showed a significant increase in customers visiting McDonald’s locations shortly after the promotion was launched, indicating strong consumer interest.

The success of McDonald’s has prompted rival fast casual dining chains to respond with their own promotions. Arby’s has introduced a $9 bundle, while Sonic has implemented a permanent $1.99 value menu. Taco Bell announced a limited-time $7 Luxe Cravings Box, alongside its existing $5 Taco Discovery Box and Cravings Value Menu.

Earlier in May, Burger King stated that its $5 “Your Way Meal” would be available for a longer period than McDonald’s deal, and it introduced new items in its “Fiery Menu.” Wendy’s has also joined the competition with a $3 breakfast bundle and a $5 combo known as the “Biggie Bag.”
