McDonald’s Extends $5 Meal Deal: What’s Next for Fast Food Value?

McDonald’s has decided to extend its popular $5 meal deal for several more weeks, following a majority agreement among its U.S. locations. This promotion, which initially started on June 25, will continue in approximately 93% of McDonald’s restaurants across the country, although the duration of the offer may vary by location, with some locations potentially extending it until August.

As consumers face higher food prices, particularly in the fast casual dining sector, the McDonald’s bundle has proven to be a successful strategy for the company. Foot traffic analytics firm Placer.ai reported a significant increase in customer visits to McDonald’s restaurants shortly after the promotion was launched, indicating strong consumer interest in the deal.

The success of McDonald’s promotional bundle has raised concerns among other fast casual dining chains, prompting them to introduce competitive offers. For instance, Arby’s has launched a $9 meal bundle, while Sonic has created a permanent value menu featuring items at $1.99. Taco Bell recently introduced a $7 Luxe Cravings Box alongside its existing $5 Taco Discovery Box and has a Cravings Value Menu.

In addition, Burger King announced in late May that its own $5 “Your Way Meal” would be available for a longer period than McDonald’s promotion. Earlier that month, Burger King revealed plans to enhance its menu with new items as part of its “Fiery Menu.” Wendy’s is also participating in the promotional landscape with a $3 breakfast bundle and a $5 combo named the “Biggie Bag.”
