McDonald’s Extends $5 Meal Deal: What’s Behind the Surge?

McDonald’s is extending its popular $5 meal deal for several more weeks, according to a memo reported by Bloomberg. A majority of the chain’s U.S. locations have agreed to continue the promotion, which initially started on June 25. The deal will be available at approximately 93% of McDonald’s restaurants across the country, although the duration of the offer may vary by location, with some franchises set to provide it until August.

With consumers facing higher food prices, especially in fast casual dining, this bundle has proven beneficial for McDonald’s. Analysis from foot traffic analytics firm Placer.ai indicates that the rollout of this meal deal significantly increased customer visits to McDonald’s restaurants, showing that it resonates well with consumers.

In response to McDonald’s success, other fast casual dining chains have started to introduce their own deals. Arby’s has launched a $9 bundle, while Sonic has introduced a permanent $1.99 value menu. Taco Bell has also joined in by offering a $7 Luxe Cravings Box temporarily, along with its $5 Taco Discovery Box and a Cravings Value Menu.

Additionally, Burger King announced that its $5 “Your Way Meal” will be available longer than McDonald’s promotion and is introducing new items as part of its “Fiery Menu.” Wendy’s is participating in the competitive landscape with a $3 breakfast bundle and has also introduced the $5 “Biggie Bag” combo.
