McDonald’s Extends $5 Meal Deal: What’s Behind the Popularity?

McDonald’s has decided to extend its popular $5 meal deal for several more weeks. According to a Bloomberg report, this extension comes after the majority of U.S.-based McDonald’s locations chose to continue the promotion, which originally launched on June 25 for four weeks.

The meal deal will be available at approximately 93% of McDonald’s restaurants nationwide, although the duration of the promotion may differ by location. Some franchises plan to keep the deal running until August.

This promotion arrives at a time when consumers are facing high food prices, particularly in the fast casual dining sector. The $5 deal has proven successful for McDonald’s, as foot traffic analytics firm Placer.ai noted a significant increase in customer visits shortly after the deal was introduced.

The popularity of McDonald’s meal deal has prompted other fast casual restaurants to introduce their own promotions. Arby’s has launched a $9 meal bundle, while Sonic has established a permanent $1.99 value menu. Taco Bell recently announced a limited-time $7 Luxe Cravings Box along with its existing $5 Taco Discovery Box and Cravings Value Menu.

Additionally, Burger King indicated that its $5 “Your Way Meal” bundle would be available for a longer duration than the McDonald’s offer. Earlier in the month, they introduced new items under their “Fiery Menu.” Wendy’s is also competing in this promotional landscape with a $3 breakfast bundle and a new $5 combo called the “Biggie Bag.”
