McDonald’s Extends $5 Meal Deal: What’s Behind the Move?

Fast food giant McDonald’s has decided to extend its popular $5 meal deal for a few additional weeks.

According to a memo from the company, a majority of McDonald’s locations in the United States have agreed to continue the promotion beyond its initial four-week run, which started on June 25. The deal will still be available at around 93% of McDonald’s restaurants across the country, although the duration of the promotion may vary by location, with some extending it until August.

As consumers face rising food prices, particularly in the fast casual dining sector, the McDonald’s bundle is proving successful for the company. A recent analysis from foot traffic monitoring firm Placer.ai indicated that following the launch of the meal deal, McDonald’s saw a significant increase in customer visits, highlighting its appeal to customers.

The successful promotion has prompted other fast casual dining chains to respond with their own deals. For instance, Arby’s has introduced a $9 bundle, while Sonic has added a permanent $1.99 value menu. Taco Bell also announced a limited-time $7 Luxe Cravings Box in addition to its existing $5 Taco Discovery Box and Cravings Value Menu.

In late May, Burger King revealed that its $5 “Your Way Meal” would exceed the duration of McDonald’s offer. The chain also announced new items in their “Fiery Menu.” Meanwhile, Wendy’s is also joining the fray with a $3 breakfast bundle and a $5 combo called the “Biggie Bag.”
