McDonald’s Extends $5 Meal Deal: What It Means for Fast Food Competition?

McDonald’s has decided to extend its popular $5 meal deal for a few additional weeks. According to a memo reported by Bloomberg, most of the U.S.-based McDonald’s restaurants have agreed to continue the promotion, which originally started on June 25 for four weeks.

The meal deal will be available at around 93% of McDonald’s locations across the country, although the duration of the promotion may differ from one location to another. Some franchises have opted to keep the deal going until August.

As consumers face rising food prices and budget constraints, the McDonald’s bundle has proven to be beneficial for the company. Placer.ai, a foot traffic analytics firm, reported that the introduction of the deal significantly increased customer visits to McDonald’s restaurants, indicating a strong consumer response.

This competitive pricing has also prompted other fast casual dining chains to roll out their own deals. For instance, Arby’s has launched a $9 bundle, while Sonic has introduced a permanent $1.99 value menu. In June, Taco Bell announced a $7 Luxe Cravings Box for a limited time, alongside its existing $5 Taco Discovery Box and Cravings Value Menu.

In late May, Burger King revealed that its $5 “Your Way Meal” would be available longer than McDonald’s promotion, and the chain has been actively adding new items to its menu, including offerings from its “Fiery Menu.” Wendy’s is also participating in the competitive landscape with a $3 breakfast bundle and a $5 combo called the “Biggie Bag.”
