Fast food leader McDonald’s has decided to extend its $5 meal promotion for several more weeks. This move comes as the chain faces its first lawsuit related to an E. coli outbreak linked to the Quarter Pounder.
According to a memo reported by Bloomberg, most McDonald’s locations in the U.S. have chosen to continue the $5 meal deal, which initially launched on June 25. The promotion will be available in approximately 93% of the restaurants nationwide, although specific durations may differ by location, with some opting to extend it until August.
The promotion appears to be a timely strategy as many consumers grapple with rising food prices, particularly in the fast casual dining sector. Recent data from foot traffic analytics firm Placer.ai shows that the introduction of the bundle has significantly increased customer visits to McDonald’s locations, indicating strong consumer interest.
The competitive landscape has prompted other fast casual chains to respond with their own promotions. For example, Arby’s has introduced a $9 meal bundle, while Sonic has implemented a permanent $1.99 value menu. Taco Bell announced a $7 Luxe Cravings Box for a limited time, alongside its $5 Taco Discovery Box and Cravings Value Menu.
Meanwhile, Burger King revealed that its $5 “Your Way Meal” will be available longer than McDonald’s offer and is expanding its menu with new items. Wendy’s has also joined the fray, launching a $3 breakfast bundle and a $5 combo known as the “Biggie Bag.”
