McDonald’s China Multi-Channels: Innovation Meets Sustainability

McDonald’s China has unveiled plans to expand its cutting-edge smart supply chain project, aiming to enhance efficiency and transparency within the domestic restaurant sector. This announcement was made during the China International Supply Chain Expo in Beijing, representing a pivotal advancement in the company’s logistics framework, according to reports.

The initiative, known as the One Case, One Code project, is set to be implemented nationwide and leverages advanced technology from Cainiao, along with critical partnerships with suppliers like Bimbo and Tyson. It will involve over 100 supplier factories across China and will assign a distinct digital identity to each product package using radio frequency identification (RFID) and other modern technologies.

As a result of these innovations, McDonald’s has experienced a more than 30% improvement in the efficiency of receiving and inventory-checking at their restaurants. The project also promises a more transparent supply chain, enhancing the ability to conduct demand and supply planning based on visible inventory data.

Phyllis Cheung, CEO of McDonald’s China, emphasized the importance of collaboration during her remarks, stating that the expo provides a vital platform for strengthening relationships with supply chain partners, driving innovation, and promoting sustainable development to ensure customers receive fresh, natural, and reliable ingredients. She highlighted the company’s commitment to a sustainable future, built upon teamwork among employees, franchisees, and suppliers.

Additionally, McDonald’s China is prioritizing sustainability and engagement with consumers. The company’s new initiative, the McFarm Calendar, showcases green agricultural practices and shares stories from farmers participating in the regenerative agriculture plan. Limited to just 5,000 copies, the calendar is available through the official app.

McDonald’s is also transforming 20 restaurants in 15 different cities into McFarm-themed locations, creating immersive experiences centered around green agriculture. Since launching its regenerative agriculture plan in 2023 with nine suppliers, the company has trained nearly 5,000 farmers.

In an effort to further promote animal welfare, McDonald’s China plans to introduce its first cage-free chicken logo in June 2024. The chickens will be raised in clean, temperature-controlled environments, allowing them the freedom to roam over 1,000 steps each day. At the expo, McDonald’s highlighted sustainable practices in cage-free chicken production through a unique art installation made from recycled paper bags.

Overall, McDonald’s China is striking a balance between innovation, sustainability, and community engagement, illustrating a commitment to a healthier food system and a brighter future in the restaurant industry.
