McDonald’s is reviving its nostalgic character cups for a limited time, appealing to those who enjoyed Happy Meals in their youth. Starting August 13, the fast-food chain will offer a new Collector’s Edition cup alongside specific meal options, including the Sausage McMuffin with Egg, the 10-piece Chicken McNuggets, and the Big Mac, each served with fries and a drink.
Customers in over 30 countries who purchase these meals will receive one of six unique cups, available in either embossed glass or Tritan plastic, celebrating earlier collectible designs. These designs span from 1999’s Pet Lovin’ Barbie to the 2007 “Shrek the Third” edition.
The reimagined designs feature popular characters and themes such as Barbie and Hot Wheels, Coca-Cola, Hello Kitty and Peanuts, Beanie Babies, Shrek, Jurassic Park, and Minions, along with McDonald’s branding.
Morgan Flatley, McDonald’s global chief marketing officer, stated, “There’s an undeniable thrill when you snag that one elusive McDonald’s collectible or the final piece to complete your collection. We’re bringing back some of our most-loved keepsakes with a twist, giving fans a memory that they can hold in their hands.” She explained that the new cups celebrate memorable designs and collaborations while inviting a new generation to create their own memories.
This initiative follows a decline in McDonald’s sales in recent months. The company is focusing on affordability, even as it has increased prices more than other major fast-food competitors in the last decade. The collectible cups are part of McDonald’s strategy to attract customers feeling the pinch from inflation, building on the success of their recently introduced $5 value meal, which has been extended due to increased customer interest.
