McDonald’s $5 Meal Deal Gets Extended: What’s Next for Fast Food?

McDonald’s has decided to extend its popular $5 meal deal for several more weeks, responding to consumer demand amidst rising food prices. According to a memo from the company reported by Bloomberg, most U.S. McDonald’s locations are continuing the promotion, which initially began on June 25 and was set for a four-week duration.

The meal bundle will remain available at approximately 93% of McDonald’s restaurants throughout the country, although the specific duration of the promotion may differ from one location to another, with some opting to continue the deal into August.

As consumers face higher costs in fast casual dining, the McDonald’s bundle has proved beneficial for the chain. A recent report from the analytics firm Placer.ai indicated that foot traffic at McDonald’s locations surged shortly after the introduction of the meal deal, highlighting its appeal to customers.

This successful promotion has prompted competing fast casual restaurants to introduce their own value deals. For example, Arby’s is offering a $9 bundle, while Sonic has unveiled a permanent $1.99 value menu. Taco Bell has also joined the competition, presenting a $7 Luxe Cravings Box alongside its $5 Taco Discovery Box and Cravings Value Menu.

Additionally, Burger King announced that its $5 “Your Way Meal” would be available for a longer period than the McDonald’s promotion and recently introduced new items as part of its “Fiery Menu.” Wendy’s has also entered the fray with a $3 breakfast bundle and a $5 combo known as the “Biggie Bag.”
