McDonald’s $5 Meal Deal Extended: What It Means for Fast Food Competition?

McDonald’s has decided to extend its $5 meal deal for a few more weeks due to strong consumer interest. According to a memo from the fast food chain, the majority of U.S. McDonald’s locations will continue to offer the promotion, which initially started on June 25 and was set for a four-week duration.

The $5 meal deal will be available at approximately 93% of McDonald’s restaurants across the country, although the specific length of the promotion may differ by location, with some franchises choosing to extend it into August.

As consumers face rising food prices, particularly in the fast casual dining sector, McDonald’s promotion has proven successful. Data from foot traffic analytics firm Placer.ai indicates that the introduction of the deal led to a significant increase in customer visits to McDonald’s locations.

The popularity of McDonald’s offer has sparked competition among other fast casual dining chains. Arby’s has responded with a $9 bundle, while Sonic has introduced a $1.99 value menu. Taco Bell also announced a $7 Luxe Cravings Box alongside its existing $5 Taco Discovery Box and Cravings Value Menu.

Earlier in May, Burger King stated that its own $5 “Your Way Meal” would be extended beyond the McDonald’s promotion, along with new offerings on its “Fiery Menu.” Wendy’s has joined the competitive landscape with a $3 breakfast bundle and a $5 combo known as the “Biggie Bag.”
