Former Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell experienced two falls on Wednesday and was taken out of the Capitol in a wheelchair as a precaution. At 82 years old, McConnell’s health has been a topic of concern, particularly due to his childhood battle with polio and various health issues that have arisen recently.
Despite this incident, McConnell’s spokeswoman, Stephanie Penn, assured that “Senator McConnell is fine,” emphasizing that the lingering effects of polio on his left leg would not interfere with his normal work schedule.
The first fall occurred on the stairs near the Senate chamber, followed by a second fall during a Republican conference lunch when he lost his balance while carrying a plate of food, landing on his side. This is not the first time McConnell has experienced health challenges; in 2023, he froze during remarks to reporters on two occasions, following previous injuries from a fall that resulted in a broken rib and a concussion.
The senator’s health has raised questions about whether aging lawmakers, including other prominent figures like former President Joe Biden and the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein, should continue to serve. McConnell, who is noted for being the longest-serving party leader in Senate history, held his position from 2007 until 2024 when he stepped down at the end of last year. He was succeeded by Senate Majority Leader John Thune.
