Washington – Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, 82, is currently recuperating from minor injuries he sustained after tripping following the weekly Senate Republicans’ lunch on Tuesday. According to a statement from his office, McConnell fell and incurred a minor cut to his face and sprained his wrist but has since been cleared to continue his schedule.
Upon heading to the Senate floor later that day, McConnell reassured reporters, stating that he was “feeling good,” despite sporting bandages under his left eye and wrist. Medical personnel were seen exiting his office shortly after the incident, and although an ambulance was present on Capitol grounds, it departed soon after.
McConnell’s deputy, Senator John Thune of South Dakota, confirmed to reporters that the Senate leader is “fine” and back in his office. McConnell, who has encountered health challenges in recent years, is poised to step down as minority leader after this year; however, he will continue to serve in the Senate, with Thune set to take over the leadership of the GOP conference.
Last year, McConnell committed to completing the remaining two years of his six-year Senate term, which concludes in January 2027. He also plans to utilize his seniority to lead the Senate Rules Committee during the next term.
This story is ongoing, and more updates will follow as they become available.
Overall, it’s heartening to see that McConnell is recovering swiftly, highlighting the resilience of seasoned politicians as they continue to serve the public.
