After the Dallas Cowboys’ disappointing 34-10 defeat against the Texans on Monday night, head coach Mike McCarthy recognized that he missed an opportunity to evaluate backup quarterback Trey Lance. In his post-game comments, McCarthy expressed that he should have sidelined starting quarterback Cooper Rush to allow Lance a chance to demonstrate his abilities on the field.
“I think the one thing I should have done at the end, and I just didn’t do, was put Trey in there. I could’ve gotten him a series. That’s one thing that I would second-guess myself on,” McCarthy admitted. “I didn’t want to get into putting him in for a play or two, because he’s more than a gadget player in my opinion. We had him prepared to take a series, and frankly, there at the end, I should’ve given him that series, and I regret not doing that.”
Drafted by the 49ers with the third overall pick in 2021, Lance comes from one of the least-experienced collegiate quarterbacks to be selected so high, yet he has seen limited playing time both in San Francisco and with the Cowboys. As the season progresses, it may become essential for the Cowboys to offer him a chance to showcase his skills. With a game against Washington on the horizon, fans and analysts alike are hopeful that this presents the perfect opportunity for Lance to step onto the field and prove his potential.
This could be an encouraging moment for the Cowboys, as allowing Lance to play may not only help him grow but could also provide the team with valuable insights into their roster as they navigate the challenges ahead.
