Vicky Mboko described her fourth-round match against top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka at the Australian Open as “a learning curve.” The 19-year-old Canadian showcased significant promise despite losing in two sets—6-1, 7-6 (1)—as she pressed the world number one, particularly in a tense second set.

After falling behind 4-1 in the second set, Mboko staged a remarkable comeback, pushing the match into a tiebreak where she appeared to have gained momentum. However, Sabalenka demonstrated her resilience by notching her 20th consecutive tiebreak victory.

Mboko reflected on the match, acknowledging that experience played a crucial role. “She played really great tennis. I, of course, had my chances,” she said, highlighting the valuable experience of competing on the prestigious Rod Laver Arena against the reigning Australian Open champion.

Ranked No. 16 in the WTA Tour standings, Mboko is known for her slow starts, which was evident in the first set against Sabalenka. However, she adjusted her approach in the second set, focusing on finding her rhythm as the match progressed.

Mboko has been gaining attention in Australia; just a week prior, she reached the final of the Adelaide International, finishing as the runner-up to Mirra Andreeva. She also achieved a notable victory against defending champion Madison Keys, defeating her 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to secure a place in the semifinals.

Despite facing challenges from a top competitor, Mboko noted the importance of improving her shot quality, recognizing that against elite players like Sabalenka, any drop in performance could be swiftly punished. “That’s something I could work on and learn from the next time,” she stated.

Looking ahead, Sabalenka, who is aiming for her third Australian Open title in four years, praised Mboko’s potential, indicating that the young star’s journey is just beginning. Sabalenka is set to face another promising talent, 18-year-old Iva Jovic of the United States, in the upcoming quarterfinals, further underscoring the bright future of women’s tennis.
