Mbappe’s Champions League Debut: A Mixed Bag for Real Madrid

Kylian Mbappe kicked off his quest for a first Champions League title with his new team, Real Madrid, but the night unfolded with mixed emotions. Despite late goals from Antonio Rudiger and Endrick securing a win, Real Madrid’s performance was disjointed, allowing Stuttgart to nearly snatch a point at the Bernabeu.

Stuttgart started strong, controlling the early moments of the match while Real Madrid relied on goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to maintain a clean sheet. The Champions League holders had a penalty appeal turned down by the video assistant referee after Rudiger went down in the box. Mbappe scored early in the second half, capping off a swift attacking move. However, Real struggled to maintain midfield control, allowing Stuttgart to equalize before Rudiger’s header restored their lead, and Endrick sealed the victory with a brilliant goal.

Mbappe’s performance was under scrutiny as he made his Champions League debut for Madrid. He was the most dangerous player on the pitch, creating several chances and ultimately scoring his first Champions League goal for the club. Despite his efforts, it wasn’t a flawless night, indicating that there’s more to come from him as he adapts to his new environment.

Real Madrid’s lack of midfield control raised concerns. Coach Carlo Ancelotti started Aurelien Tchouameni and Jude Bellingham, both returning from injury, but they struggled to dominate the game. Stuttgart controlled possession, a rarity at the Bernabeu, revealing Madrid’s dependence on Toni Kroos, who retired at the end of last season. Ancelotti’s frustration was visible as he substituted Tchouameni for veteran Luka Modric during the match.

The team’s defensive issues were also apparent. With Nacho Fernandez leaving for Saudi Arabia and no replacement acquired, Ancelotti had to field right-back Dani Carvajal in a central defensive role, which didn’t prove effective. Even after substituting in Eder Militao at halftime, Stuttgart found opportunities to threaten, emphasizing Madrid’s need for additional defensive depth.

Courtois was instrumental once again, making crucial saves to keep Madrid in the game during a challenging first half when Stuttgart enjoyed a significant possession advantage. His performance was pivotal in limiting Stuttgart’s goal-scoring opportunities.

Following the match, Ancelotti praised Endrick’s late goal, highlighting the young player’s courage and ability to seize critical moments, further emphasizing that he is a special talent.

Looking ahead, Real Madrid will face Espanyol in La Liga on Saturday, September 21.
