A representative for Kylian Mbappé has strongly rejected reports from Swedish media alleging that the French soccer player is “suspected on reasonable grounds of rape.” He described these claims as “totally false and irresponsible.”
Various Swedish news outlets, including public broadcaster SVT and CNN affiliate Expressen, have cited documents suggesting that Mbappé’s recent visit to a nightclub and hotel in Stockholm on October 10 raised suspicions. Swedish police clarified that “suspected on reasonable grounds” means there are specific circumstances indicating that the person may have committed an offense.
On Tuesday, Swedish prosecutors confirmed that a criminal report had been filed related to these media allegations. They have not disclosed any names in their press release and stated that further information could not be provided when contacted for details.
In response to these allegations, the 25-year-old soccer star labeled the reports “FAKE NEWS” in a post on social media after a similar article appeared in French media, which was later removed.
Mbappé’s representative stated, “A new slanderous rumor is starting to set the web ablaze, originating from the Swedish media AFTONBLADET and EXPRESSEN. These accusations are totally false and irresponsible, and their spread is unacceptable. Kylian Mbappé will not tolerate under any circumstances that his integrity, reputation and honor be tarnished by unfounded insinuations.”
The representative also announced that legal actions will be pursued to counter these damaging claims.
Mbappé’s lawyer, Marie-Alix Canu-Bernard, also defended him on French television, calling the accusations a “slanderous denunciation.” She said that he remained calm during training despite the unrest. However, she noted that he is bewildered by the media uproar and cannot understand the basis of the allegations.
The footballer missed France’s last two UEFA Nations League matches against Israel and Belgium.
Mbappé was reported to have traveled to Stockholm over the past week, spending Thursday and Friday in the city.
