Kylian Mbappé marked his debut goal for Real Madrid as the team defeated Italy’s Atalanta 2-0 to claim the UEFA Super Cup in Warsaw, Poland, on August 14, 2024.
This annual preseason event brings together the Champions League winner, Real Madrid, and the Europa League champion, Atalanta, ahead of the upcoming domestic league season.
The first half was largely uneventful, highlighted by Vinícius Júnior’s close call hitting the post. However, Real Madrid seized control in the second half, starting with Federico Valverde’s goal in the 59th minute. Just nine minutes later, Mbappé made his presence felt in the match.
Jude Bellingham delivered a pass to Mbappé, who maneuvered into space inside the Atalanta penalty area and successfully scored in the top right corner, marking his first goal for the club.
The 25-year-old French forward donned the iconic No. 9 jersey previously held by club legends including Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, and Ronaldo Nazário. He played the entire match, contributing to Real Madrid’s sixth UEFA Super Cup victory.
Mbappé joined Real Madrid in June after a successful seven-year tenure with Paris Saint-Germain, where he won multiple Ligue 1 titles and reached the Champions League final in 2020. At his new club, he is reportedly set to earn $16 million annually, alongside a signing bonus exceeding $100 million, joining a star-studded squad featuring Vinícius Júnior, Bellingham, Rodrygo, and Luka Modrić.
Real Madrid will next face Mallorca on Saturday as they kick off their La Liga campaign, aiming for their 37th league title and their fifth since the 2016-17 season.
