Luis Garcia shared his thoughts on Real Madrid’s impressive performance during their Super Cup clash against Atalanta.
In a stunning display, Kylian Mbappé marked his debut with a goal as Real Madrid dominated Atalanta, securing a 2-0 victory to claim the European Super Cup on Wednesday.
Federico Valverde gave the European champions a lead in the 59th minute, scoring from close range. Mbappé then added the second goal nine minutes later, firing into the top corner following a pass from Jude Bellingham.
This victory allowed Madrid to capture their record sixth Super Cup title, surpassing Barcelona and AC Milan, who have both lifted the trophy five times.
Mbappé, who signed with Madrid in June from Paris Saint-Germain, nearly found the net in the 15th minute, but his attempt was blocked by Atalanta’s defense.
Atalanta made their Super Cup debut after winning the Europa League and initially held their ground against the more experienced Madrid team. As the match progressed, they grew in confidence, with Marten de Roon’s deflected shot hitting the crossbar.
The Italian side created several opportunities, including an Éderson shot that went just wide and a saved strike from Ademola Lookman, thwarted by Real keeper Thibaut Courtois.
Real Madrid also had their chances, with Rodrygo missing a great opportunity just before halftime, hitting the bar with a low pass from Vinicius Junior. Atalanta’s Mario Pasalic threatened Courtois with a header that the Belgian goalkeeper expertly saved.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side finally broke the deadlock when Valverde capitalized on a precise delivery from Vinícius. Madrid could have extended their lead through Vinicius and Bellingham, who wasted opportunities before Bellingham assisted Mbappé for the second goal, allowing the Frenchman to finish neatly.
This marks a significant moment for the 25-year-old Mbappé, who, after winning seven Ligue 1 titles with Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco, had never tasted victory in a European club competition until now. He was substituted seven minutes before the final whistle.
