Floyd Mayweather Jr. faced John Gotti III in a rematch of their previous exhibition bout, which took place on Saturday night at Arena CDMX in Mexico City, broadcast live on DAZN. Unlike their first encounter, this match avoided excessive trash talk and brawls, instead showcasing Mayweather’s boxing mastery over eight two-minute rounds.
The 47-year-old Mayweather demonstrated his skills by effectively utilizing jabs and combinations, comfortably landing punches while adeptly dodging Gotti III’s attempts. Throughout the match, he displayed a relaxed demeanor, even smiling at times.
Mayweather expressed gratitude towards Gotti for his commitment, stating, “We had to put on a show for the people. I want to thank Gotti for being a man of his word.” The two fighters embraced after the match, signaling the end of any residual animosity.
Gotti III complimented Mayweather, affirming, “He still got it,” acknowledging the boxing legend’s continued prowess in the ring.
The bout saw some controversy in the second round when the referee paused the fight to caution Mayweather about hitting behind the head, to which Mayweather responded by demanding that the referee “move!” Following this, the referee was replaced, and Mayweather resumed his dominance, effectively re-establishing his jab and further controlling the fight.
Despite Gotti III’s efforts, he struggled against Mayweather’s exceptional technique, a challenge that many have faced, as seen in Mayweather’s undefeated professional record of 50-0.
Post-fight, Mayweather appeared to dismiss the possibility of an exhibition with fellow boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez, instead praising Chavez for his significant contributions to the sport.
