After the intense finale of Season 4, “Mayor of Kingstown,” the Paramount+ crime drama featuring Jeremy Renner has officially been renewed for a fifth and final season. This concluding installment will consist of eight episodes, a reduction from the 10 episodes in the previous seasons, and will see the return of Edie Falco alongside Renner.
This announcement marks the first ongoing series from Taylor Sheridan to be granted an end date following a leadership change at Paramount+. In recent months, Paramount+ has also greenlit new seasons for Sheridan’s other projects, including “Landman,” “Tulsa King,” and “Lioness.” Paramount’s new streaming chief, Cindy Holland, highlighted that the Taylor Sheridan universe has become a pivotal foundation for the platform. Furthermore, Sheridan recently announced plans to transition to NBCUniversal by 2029.
“Mayor of Kingstown” has been a consistent performer for Paramount+, showing a marked improvement in critical reception, which has seen its Rotten Tomatoes score climb from 33% for Season 1 to an impressive 100% for Season 4, featuring Falco in a key role. Despite this, the series has not reached the same ratings success as other Sheridan dramas. The fourth season coincided with new releases from “Landman” and “Tulsa King,” both of which have achieved significant chart placements on Nielsen’s weekly rankings.
This decision to produce a final season stems from the show’s legacy within the Taylor Sheridan universe, even as it has not made it into Nielsen’s Top 10 for originals during its fourth season, unlike previous installments.
In Season 4, Renner’s character, Mike, faces escalating threats as new factions vie for control in Kingstown, igniting a violent gang war and a struggle to protect his loved ones, all while contending with a strong-willed new Warden played by Falco. The season culminates in a dramatic finale that sets the stage for exploring the repercussions in the upcoming episodes.
Dillon, a co-creator, revealed that Sheridan has had a clear vision for the series’ conclusion, initially aiming for seven seasons. He specified that they have a solid plan for where the narrative is headed, with Sheridan having outlined key plot points since the show’s inception.
Joining Renner and Falco in the final season are Lennie James, Laura Benanti, Dillon, Taylor Handley, Tobi Bamtefa, Derek Webster, Hamish Allan-Headley, and Nishi Munshi. This collaboration is produced by Paramount Television Studios, alongside 101 Studios and Bosque Ranch Productions, with Sheridan serving as executive producer.
As fans look forward to the final chapter of “Mayor of Kingstown,” there is a sense of anticipation to see how the story unfolds and concludes, promising to provide closure for viewers invested in the character journeys and overarching narrative crafted by Sheridan and his team.
