Maya Hawke expressed her enthusiasm for being part of the “Hunger Games” franchise during her recent appearance on “The Tonight Show.” The actress, known for her role in “Stranger Things,” highlighted the series’ unique combination of being both “anti-fascist” and “mainstream,” which she finds particularly special.

In her conversation with host Jimmy Fallon, Hawke shared her pride in joining the franchise, mentioning, “First of all, the ‘Hunger Games’ as a franchise I think is so cool, because it’s like so explicitly anti-fascist but so mainstream — which is so unique and special.” She noted that being involved in such impactful storytelling was a significant reason for her excitement.

Additionally, Hawke expressed admiration for Jennifer Lawrence, whose portrayal of Katniss Everdeen has been a major inspiration for her aspiration to act. “She’s amazing,” Hawke said, reflecting on her admiration for Lawrence and how her performances have deeply influenced her.

While she confirmed that Lawrence would appear in the upcoming prequel, “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping,” Hawke did not provide specific details about the character’s return. She also praised director Francis Lawrence, acknowledging the positive atmosphere he fosters on set.

Hawke’s role in the film, confirmed in May, will see her portray Wiress, the victor of the 49th Hunger Games from District Three, a character previously introduced by Amanda Plummer in “Catching Fire.” Besides Hawke, the prequel boasts a star-studded cast that includes Joseph Zada, Mckenna Grace, Jesse Plemons, Ralph Fiennes, and Glenn Close, among others.

“Sunrise on the Reaping” is set to explore the events in Panem 24 years prior to Katniss’ involvement, starting with the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games and featuring a young Haymitch Abernathy. The film is scheduled to release in theaters on November 20, 2026. This addition to the franchise promises to deliver a fresh and compelling narrative, further enriching the beloved world of “The Hunger Games.”
