Mavericks Lean on 18-Year-Old Cooper Flagg at Point Guard

The Dallas Mavericks are brushing off their opening night defeat against the San Antonio Spurs and looking forward to their next challenge. Head coach Jason Kidd has expressed confidence in his unique lineup that includes 18-year-old rookie Cooper Flagg as the point guard. Following practice on Thursday, Kidd praised Flagg for his ability to engage his teammates despite early foul troubles that disrupted their rotation.

Kidd noted, “He did a really good job of trying to get others involved. We were in foul trouble three minutes into the game, which changes the dynamics of the rotation.” He emphasized the importance of focusing on the upcoming game and the need to minimize fouls.

Max Christie, who contributed nine points with three successful three-pointers in the opener, mentioned that practice sessions have been focused on reviewing film. He acknowledged the challenges facing Flagg in his new role, stating, “It’s the first game. He’s 18 years old and we’re putting him in a tough spot. I wouldn’t say it’s his natural position.” Flagg, primarily a forward in high school and college, has shown promise in making plays, even if he has yet to settle into the point guard role fully.

The Mavericks will next face the Washington Wizards, who are coming off a season-opening loss to the Milwaukee Bucks and struggled last season with one of the league’s worst records. Kidd is wary of the Wizards’ offensive capabilities, pointing out seasoned scorers like CJ McCollum and Khris Middleton, stating, “They can score. It’s not the Washington of old; they can put up a lot of points.”

With a positive outlook and adjustments planned, the Mavericks aim to bounce back and establish momentum in their upcoming game.
