Sean Sweeney, who served as Jason Kidd’s top assistant coach for the Dallas Mavericks over the past four seasons, is officially departing to become the associate head coach of the San Antonio Spurs under Mitch Johnson. This transition was reported initially by ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Sweeney’s exit marks a significant loss for the Mavericks, as he is widely recognized in the NBA for his defensive expertise. His contributions were instrumental in improving the Mavericks’ defensive performance, elevating their ranking from 21st in defensive rating to sixth during the 2021-22 season.
While Sweeney’s move was anticipated, given the interest he attracted from various teams throughout his tenure in Dallas, it is worth noting that he had previously been a finalist for coaching positions with the Phoenix Suns and the Detroit Pistons.
The Mavericks are currently experiencing an offseason reshuffle in their coaching staff. Alongside Sweeney, Alex Jensen has left to become the new men’s basketball coach at Utah, and Darrell Armstrong is not expected to return. In response to these departures, the Mavericks have also welcomed Jay Triano to Kidd’s staff, who brings extensive experience as a long-time NBA assistant.
Sweeney played a key role in guiding the Mavericks to their third NBA Finals appearance in 2024. Meanwhile, speculation surrounds assistant coach Jared Dudley, who is reportedly being considered for a role on the new coaching staff in Memphis, and God Shammgod, who is receiving interest from the Orlando Magic.
This transition opens up fresh opportunities for the Mavericks as they look to rebuild and reshape their coaching staff in preparation for the upcoming season.
