The animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars has long been celebrated within the broader Star Wars saga since its debut in 2008. Set in the critical three-year period between the films Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, the series reintroduced familiar characters and added new ones, enhancing the depth of the Star Wars universe.

One of the standout characters is Maul, formerly known as Darth Maul, a feared Sith Lord who made a memorable first appearance in The Phantom Menace. Despite his apparent defeat at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Maul’s story continued in The Clone Wars, where he sought revenge against his former adversary.

Maul’s journey extended into other Star Wars stories, including the animated series Rebels and a cameo in Solo: A Star Wars Story, where his character had evolved, becoming heavily involved with the crime syndicate known as Crimson Dawn. However, since his last appearance in Solo, Maul has not resurfaced in any major Star Wars media, leaving fans eager for more.

This summer, fans can look forward to the return of Maul in the new animated series titled Maul – Shadow Lord. Announced by Sam Witwer at Star Wars Celebration 2025 in Tokyo, the series is set after The Clone Wars and focuses on Maul’s efforts to rebuild his criminal empire in a galaxy still reeling from the aftermath of the Empire’s rise.

The new series promises a darker visual style, reflecting Maul’s grim perspective. Witwer described the animation as “more edgy and jagged and dangerous,” while still maintaining the aesthetic roots of its predecessors. Lucasfilm confirmed that Shadow Lord will explore Maul’s quest for power amidst the ruthless underbelly of the galaxy following Order 66.

Additionally, excitement is building ahead of the show’s premiere on Disney+ later this year. Accompanying the series release, Marvel Comics will also unveil a five-issue prequel titled “Shadow of Maul,” which will delve deeper into Maul’s character and journey.

The Star Wars universe is set to expand further with additional animated series, including Star Wars: Visions Presents and a new season of Ahsoka. With exciting new narratives on the horizon, fans of the franchise can eagerly anticipate fresh stories that continue to explore beloved characters and themes, while solidifying Star Wars’ legacy in popular culture.
