Maui County is preparing for an exciting New Year’s Eve with two public aerial fireworks displays to ring in 2026. The shows will take place at the Grand Wailea Resort in South Maui and the Four Seasons Resort Lānaʻi at Mānele Bay, both set to commence at 11:59 p.m. on December 31, 2025.

In accordance with the upcoming celebrations, the County of Maui’s Department of Fire and Public Safety has initiated the sale of New Year’s Eve fireworks, which commenced on December 26, 2025, and will run until 12:01 a.m. on January 1, 2026. Residents planning to use consumer fireworks, which include sparklers and small fountains that do not exceed 12 feet in height, are not required to obtain a permit during designated times. However, a permit is necessary to use firecrackers, which can be purchased at specified locations.

The firecracker permit, priced at $25, allows for the purchase of up to 5,000 pieces, and there is no limit on the number of permits an individual may obtain. To purchase a permit, applicants must be at least 18 years old and provide proof of age. Permits will be available at 12 locations in Maui, one on Lānaʻi, and two on Molokaʻi.

The Maui Fire Department emphasizes adherence to safety regulations concerning fireworks. Legal use is confined to the hours between 9 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and 1 a.m. on New Year’s Day. Violating this timeframe can lead to fines of up to $5,000. Aerial fireworks are illegal without a permit, classified as a Class C Felony if violated.

Safety rules also prohibit removing pyrotechnic contents, throwing ignited fireworks from a vehicle, and setting off fireworks near healthcare facilities, schools, or on public roads. Furthermore, selling or giving fireworks to minors is illegal, with exceptions for parental supervision.

Officials from the Maui Fire Department stress the importance of safety when using fireworks, warning that they can cause serious burns and injuries. Young children should never be allowed to handle fireworks, including sparklers, which burn at extremely high temperatures. Adults are urged to supervise children and to use fireworks responsibly while adhering to safety instructions provided by manufacturers.

Fire department officials remind residents that while using fireworks is a cherished tradition to celebrate the New Year, it also poses risks. They encourage the community to prioritize safety, promote mutual care, and enjoy the festivities responsibly, allowing everyone to safely celebrate the New Year. The officials concluded by advising that the safest option is to leave fireworks to the professionals.
