The Maui Police Department is currently conducting an internal investigation following an incident involving an officer using what has been termed “unjustified force” during the arrest of a suspect last Friday night. The altercation, which was captured on video and subsequently shared on social media, occurred around 11 p.m. on October 31.
During routine patrol checks, officers encountered a man with three active no-bail warrants. According to reports, the suspect resisted arrest and allegedly attempted to ram police vehicles with his car on two occasions.
The video footage shows a female officer allegedly striking a handcuffed individual who had already been subdued with a Taser. In response to the public outcry prompted by the video, the Maui Police Department promptly initiated both a criminal and interior investigation the following day, November 1. The officer involved in the incident has been reassigned to administrative duties while the investigation is underway.
Maui Police Chief John Pelletier acknowledged the community’s concerns regarding the incident, which involved a suspect charged with violent crimes against police officers. He emphasized that, while the situation was serious, it does not excuse actions that contradict the department’s values. Chief Pelletier reaffirmed the department’s commitment to transparency and due process as they navigate the investigation.
In light of increasing scrutiny surrounding police practices, this incident may serve as an opportunity for the Maui Police Department to engage with the community and work towards restoring trust through accountability and transparency.
