Hawaiian Electric has activated its Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) program, leading to power outages for around 330 customers in Upcountry Maui due to elevated wildfire risks prompted by strong winds and dry conditions. Residents are being encouraged to put their emergency plans into action and brace for potential extended outages. Jim Alberts, the senior vice president and chief operations officer of Hawaiian Electric, emphasized the importance of this precautionary measure, stating, “We only activate a PSPS as a last line of defense to protect lives and reduce the risk of a wildfire.”

Although a PSPS has not been reported for Hawaiʻi County, customers in Upcountry Maui may face outages overnight into Monday morning. Earlier in the weekend, Hawaiian Electric had ended a wildfire safety watch, but the situation remains monitored closely as conditions could change rapidly.

The company has advised customers in high-risk areas to prepare for the possibility of outages, providing them with guidance on how to get ready. This includes checking flashlights, ensuring emergency equipment is functional, and preparing emergency supplies. They also urged residents to stay informed about weather conditions and be vigilant about potential power line hazards during outages.

In light of these precautionary measures, the community is encouraged to prioritize safety and preparedness. By taking these steps, Hawaiian Electric aims to minimize the risks associated with wildfires while ensuring that residents are equipped to handle potential challenges posed by power outages.
