As Northeastern University prepares to say goodbye to Matthews Arena, fans have the opportunity to own a piece of its history through an online sale of bricks and seats. The arena, which has been a cherished landmark for over a century, will host its final game on December 13 before undergoing demolition.
For those interested in commemorating their connection to this iconic venue, the university is offering commemorative bricks for $150, stadium seats priced at $600, and a seat with a commemorative base available for $1,000. Each item will come with a certificate of authenticity, ensuring buyers that they possess a genuine piece of Matthews Arena history. Additionally, bricks will be shipped free within the U.S. by February 2026.
Currently, 1,000 commemorative bricks are available for purchase, with the “first” brick, labeled “#1,” currently being auctioned. At the time of this writing, bidding for the unique brick had reached $575, highlighting its perceived value as a collectible. The auction for this one-of-a-kind item will close on December 16.
Matthews Arena, once known as Boston Arena, has an illustrious history. Northeastern University acquired the venue in 1979, and it has been the backdrop for countless significant events, including games featuring the Boston Celtics and Boston Bruins, as well as performances from notable figures such as John F. Kennedy, Bob Dylan, and The Supremes. The arena was renamed Matthews Arena in 1982 in honor of alumnus George Matthews, who contributed to its renovations.
This isn’t the first time Northeastern has offered memorabilia for sale. In 2021, the university sold personalized seats and bricks from Friedman Diamond ranging from $200 to $500, as well as plaques for $1,000.
As the final moments at Matthews Arena draw near, the chance to own a piece of its legacy offers fans a tangible connection to the memories created there. Whether it’s a brick or a stadium seat, each item represents a chapter in the storied history of this beloved arena.
