Matt Gay Questionable as Commanders Face Monday Night Chiefs

The Washington Commanders may be facing a kicker dilemma ahead of their Monday night matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. Matt Gay, the team’s current kicker, appeared on the injury report with a back issue. He did not participate in practice on Saturday but had practiced on Thursday and Friday. With Gay now listed as questionable for the game, his availability remains uncertain.

Currently, Gay boasts a season record of 10 out of 14 field-goal attempts, along with perfect successful points after touchdown (PAT) attempts. Despite the injury, Gay has not missed any games this season, and it is unclear when the back injury occurred. His participation in practices earlier in the week suggests he might have sustained the injury on Friday. Head coach Dan Quinn did not address Gay’s status during the team’s media session on Saturday.

Positive news came when it was reported that Gay traveled with the team to Kansas City, although this might merely indicate that the Commanders are waiting to see how he performs during pre-game warmups before deciding his status for the game. Currently, there are no other kickers on the practice squad, but the team could make a last-minute move to secure a replacement if necessary.

Among the available free-agent options, there are veteran kickers familiar with the organization. Cade York previously played for the Commanders but was let go after missing two field goals in last season’s opener. Greg Joseph, who has eight years of experience and spent the offseason with the 49ers, is another potential option, having kicked for Washington in one game last season.

As kick-off approaches, the Commanders will continue to monitor Gay’s situation, and fans will be hopeful for positive news regarding his ability to suit up against the Chiefs.
