Master Shipbuilder Luther H. Peacock: A Legacy of Craftsmanship and Family

Luther H. Peacock, a revered master shipbuilder and beloved family member, passed away on September 25, 2024, at the age of 84, just two days before his 85th birthday. He was born in Wilson County to Alvin and Lela Peacock and grew up in Kenly, North Carolina, attending Buckhorn Elementary and Rock Ridge High School.

At the age of 18, Luther relocated to Newport News, Virginia, where he began an impressive 63-year career at the Newport News Shipyard and Dry Dock Company. He graduated from the renowned Apprentice School and served two years in the United States Army. After his military service, he returned to the shipyard, where he made significant contributions to submarine and aircraft carrier programs. Luther played a key role in designing the Los Angeles-class attack submarines, a notable advancement in naval technology, and was involved in the design and overhaul of aircraft carriers. Over his distinguished career, he contributed to the construction and design of 53 naval vessels, showcasing his extensive expertise and dedication to shipbuilding. His six-decade-long commitment to the industry earned him the title of Master Shipbuilder.

Luther is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 63 years, Marietha (Godwin), his children William Peacock of Newport News, VA, and Robert Peacock and his wife Linda of Selma, NC, as well as his grandson, Luke Peacock of Gloucester, Virginia. He was predeceased by his parents and siblings, Billy Ray Peacock and Janice Brown. At 29, Luther embraced Christianity and became a second-generation member of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church, a denomination with historical ties to the Azusa Street Revival of 1906 in Los Angeles.

A passionate sports fan, Luther played baseball and football at the Apprentice School and took part in the Newport News Shipbuilding baseball and golf leagues. He was a dedicated supporter of the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, Baltimore Colts, and the University of North Carolina. Golf remained a favorite hobby, especially when enjoyed with family, friends, and during Apprentice School Alumni tournaments. Luther will be remembered for his strong faith, work ethic, kindness, sense of humor, and unwavering support for his family.

A graveside service is scheduled for September 30th at 11:00 a.m. at the Godwin Family Cemetery, located at 537 Jerusalem Church Road, Kenly, North Carolina 27542. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Newport News Apprentice School Foundation scholarship fund in memory of Luther H. Peacock.
