Master Shipbuilder and Family Man: Remembering Luther H. Peacock

Luther H. Peacock, a respected master shipbuilder and devoted family man, passed away on September 25, 2024, at the age of 84, just two days before his 85th birthday. He was born in Wilson County, North Carolina, to Alvin and Lela Peacock and grew up in Kenly. Luther attended Buckhorn Elementary School and graduated from Rock Ridge High School.

At the age of 18, Luther relocated to Newport News, Virginia, where he began an impressive 63-year career at the Newport News Shipyard and Dry Dock Company. He completed his training at the esteemed Apprentice School and later served two years in the United States Army. Upon his return to the shipyard, Luther played a crucial role in the submarine and aircraft carrier programs. His work included the design of the Los Angeles-class attack submarines, marking a significant advancement in naval engineering. Over the course of his career, he contributed to the construction and design of 53 naval vessels, showcasing his extensive expertise in shipbuilding. Luther was honored as a Master Shipbuilder for his exceptional skills and dedication to his craft.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Marietha (Godwin), with whom he shared nearly 63 years of marriage, as well as his children, William Peacock of Newport News, VA, and Robert Peacock and his wife Linda of Selma, NC. Luther also leaves a grandson, Luke Peacock, of Gloucester, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Billy Ray Peacock and Janice Brown. At 29, Luther embraced Christianity and became a second-generation member of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church, a denomination with origins in the Azusa Street Revival of 1906 in Los Angeles.

Luther was a passionate sports lover, participating in baseball and football while at the Apprentice School, and later engaging in local baseball and golf leagues. He was particularly fond of the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, Baltimore Colts, and the University of North Carolina. Golf was a favorite pastime, especially enjoyed with family, friends, and fellow alumni of the Apprentice School. Luther will be remembered for his strong faith, work ethic, kindness, playful nature, quick humor, and unwavering support for his family.

A graveside service is scheduled for September 30th at 11:00 a.m. at the Godwin Family Cemetery located at 537 Jerusalem Church Road, Kenly, North Carolina 27542. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the scholarship fund for the Newport News Apprentice School Foundation in Luther H. Peacock’s honor.
