A massive plume of Saharan dust, comparable in size to the continental United States, is currently floating over the Atlantic Ocean and is set to affect the Gulf Coast region this week. This thick cloud of dust has traveled an impressive distance of over 5,000 miles from North Africa before reaching Florida.
The National Weather Service in Puerto Rico has issued a warning regarding the potential for poor air quality, particularly for individuals with respiratory issues such as asthma, advising them to wear masks for protection.
As the plume approaches South Florida and other Gulf Coast states midweek, it is expected to lose some of its density; however, residents may still notice significant changes in their surroundings. The presence of dust particles in the high atmosphere will scatter sunlight, giving the environment a different appearance. “Typically we have nice blue skies, but with the dust, the whole sky looks soft and warm because the particles themselves are red,” noted Joseph Prospero, a professor emeritus at the University of Miami Center for Aerosol Science and Technology.
