The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a significant recall affecting approximately 5 million aboveground pools due to a design flaw linked to the deaths of at least nine children since 2007. The pools are produced by Bestway, Intex, and Polygroup, and feature an outside compression strap that poses a risk by allowing children to climb into the pools without the need for a ladder or step.
This strap, intended to support the pool’s structural integrity, encircles the vertical support legs, thus creating a safety hazard for young children. The commission emphasizes the importance of addressing this issue promptly, urging pool owners to reach out to their respective manufacturers to obtain a repair kit immediately.
These aboveground pools have been sold across various retailers in the U.S. and Canada, including popular stores like Walmart, Amazon, Costco, and Target, with sales dating back to 2002 and some as recently as 2025. The pools in question are classified as four feet tall or higher.
This recall highlights the critical need for vigilance around safety features when it comes to children’s products. While the situation is serious, the proactive measures being taken by the Consumer Product Safety Commission can help prevent future tragedies and ensure safer summer experiences for families.
