Massachusetts is bracing for a significant winter storm as Governor Maura Healey declared a state of emergency in anticipation of heavy snowfall and hazardous conditions across the region. Forecasts predict that the nor’easter could deliver nearly two feet of snow in some areas, particularly from Boston to Worcester County, with the potential for up to 30 inches in parts of southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
Governor Healey emphasized the seriousness of the situation, urging residents to remain indoors and warning that travel could be “potentially life-threatening.” To support local response efforts, Healey activated emergency operations centers and deployed 200 members of the Massachusetts National Guard. In a bid to minimize risks, she ordered all nonessential state employees to work from home and recommended the same for private businesses.
Mayor Michelle Wu of Boston echoed similar sentiments, announcing the closure of city hall, public schools, and numerous municipal buildings. By Sunday evening, nearly 400 flights were canceled at Boston Logan International Airport, with airlines mobilizing to manage the disruption. As the storm approaches, utility companies including Eversource and National Grid are preparing their crews for possible power outages, deploying hundreds of workers to address any service interruptions caused by falling trees or downed lines.
Meteorologists have issued blizzard warnings and are predicting whiteout conditions with snowfall rates potentially reaching 2 to 3 inches per hour during the storm’s peak, effectively overwhelming snow removal efforts. The National Weather Service expects high winds that could lead to substantial damage and hazardous travel conditions. Coastal flood advisories are also in effect for areas of Eastern Massachusetts, exacerbating the risks posed by the storm.
Boston’s previous struggles with snow removal from a recent storm have heightened concerns ahead of this event, particularly after a weather event earlier this year resulted in significant accumulation and delays in municipal services. Officials are stressing the importance of community cooperation, particularly around snow removal etiquette, as residents are encouraged to respect parking regulations and refrain from using space savers in public areas.
As the storm looms, officials emphasize safety and preparedness measures, reminding residents to stay informed through official channels and to check on neighbors who might need assistance. The coordinated response aims to minimize disruptions as much as possible amid the coming challenges posed by the blizzard.
