Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti expressed strong support for Smith, describing him as a “proven and exceptional talent” who will greatly benefit the Big Ten Athletic Director group. Former Ohio State University Athletic Director Gene Smith highlighted Smith’s unique qualifications, noting his impressive background in managing both professional and collegiate sports, which positions him well to tackle the evolving challenges within intercollegiate athletics.
Rich McKay, CEO of AMB Sports and Entertainment, praised Smith’s leadership capabilities, emphasizing his adeptness at building relationships and navigating complex situations. “Maryland is getting someone who understands the business of sports,” McKay stated.
Derek Schiller, President and CEO of the Atlanta Braves, lauded Smith for his extensive experience in enhancing championship organizations and his exceptional communication skills. “He will take Maryland’s athletic program to new heights,” Schiller remarked.
UMD President Darryll J. Pines also expressed confidence in Smith’s abilities, citing his energy, vision, and passion for leading the athletic department. Smith himself stated he is “highly motivated to build upon excellence” while maintaining a focus on the health and success of student-athletes.
Throughout his 20-year career, Smith has taken on various high-level positions in notable organizations, including the Ohio State University Alumni Association and Arthur M. Blank Sports & Entertainment. His tenure with the Braves was marked by substantial revenue growth and the successful implementation of innovative marketing strategies.
Smith’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for the University of Maryland, following significant achievements since joining the Big Ten Conference in 2014, including 49 conference championships and several national team titles. With his wealth of experience and a strong professional network, Smith is well-equipped to propel Maryland’s athletic program forward.
