Maryland football’s promising start to the season with a 4-0 record initially sparked optimism among fans and supporters, signaling a potential turnaround for the program. However, the team’s recent struggles, culminating in three consecutive losses including one to a team that had recently parted ways with its head coach, have cast a shadow over these hopeful beginnings and underscored the fact that significant challenges remain ahead for the Terps.
The ongoing disappointing results are also having an impact on the morale of some of the program’s key donors. While most of Maryland’s boosters continue to publicly support head coach Michael Locksley, a small number of influential figures within the donor community are expressing concerns about the team’s direction and are advocating for a change in leadership. Those backing Locksley are highlighting the potential of the team’s roster, which features promising freshmen, and argue for continuity into 2026 and beyond. Nevertheless, they find themselves needing to persuade a faction of their peers who are calling for immediate results.
Tom McCausland, a prominent booster who has been a supporter of Locksley for two decades, reflected the mixed sentiments among donors. He noted that within his circle of supporters, opinions vary widely. “Some want to win now, some are disgruntled, and some are like me,” he explained, emphasizing the diverse perspectives that exist among the program’s backers regarding the future of the football team.
The mixed feelings surrounding the team’s performance can act as a catalyst for constructive discussions on how best to support the program moving forward. With a promising roster in place, there remains a sense of hope that, with the right resources and time, Maryland football can still forge a successful path in the competitive landscape of college football.
