Maryland Braces for Freezing Temps and Wintry Mix Ahead of Thanksgiving Weekend

Temperatures are set to drop significantly across Maryland tonight as a blast of cold air makes its way into the region. With a gusty breeze, it will feel like it’s in the teens and 20s overnight and into early Sunday morning. While clouds will linger through the evening, there’s a slight chance of snow flurries. If you have plans outside, be sure to dress warmly.

The colder temperatures align with the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday and will also coincide with the Baltimore Ravens game this evening. Kick-off is scheduled for 8:20 p.m., with temperatures predicted to hover in the mid to upper 30s and a mostly cloudy sky. As the game progresses, temperatures are expected to drop to around freezing by the end of the fourth quarter, though wind speeds will ease slightly by halftime.

Looking ahead to Black Friday, the morning will start relatively chilly, with highs only reaching the upper 30s to lower 40s in the afternoon, while wind chill could make it feel much colder. A mix of sun and clouds will be present, along with the possibility of minor snow flurries in the Baltimore metro area, and light snow showers are expected in the mountainous regions of western Maryland and southern Pennsylvania. No significant snowfall accumulation is anticipated, but flurries may cause brief visibility issues.

As Saturday rolls around, temperatures are expected to reach the low to mid-40s with plenty of sunshine and calmer winds, making it the best day of the weekend. However, a new weather system will move in Saturday night, bringing clouds and a light wintry mix by early Sunday morning. This mix will include wet snowflakes and sleet, primarily impacting areas north and west of Baltimore. Roadways will remain wet and conditions could result in slower travel, particularly with the influx of holiday traffic.

The WJZ First Alert Weather Team has designated Sunday as a potential First Alert Weather Day due to the expected rain and lingering showers throughout the day, with light rainfall totals between 0.20″ and 0.40″.

Looking forward to next week, a winter storm could affect portions of the region beginning late Monday night into Tuesday morning. This storm has the potential to deliver a variety of winter weather conditions, including snow, sleet, and ice. Areas north and west of Baltimore are predicted to face the greatest risk of accumulation, although the entire area could see some precipitation. The specifics regarding the storm’s path and impacts remain uncertain, but the WJZ team will continue to monitor the situation closely.

As the holiday weekend unfolds, be sure to stay updated on changing weather conditions as the chance for winter weather approaches. Happy Thanksgiving, and stay warm.
