Martínez Champions Portuguese Players Ahead of World Cup Showdown

Roberto Martínez discussed the performance of Portuguese players in the ongoing Club World Cup during an exclusive interview with DAZN. The national team’s coach expressed satisfaction with the displays of his players, particularly highlighting Alberto Costa, who is still vying for his first call-up to the national squad. Martínez noted that discussions about the tournament did not take place during the recent Nations League, which Portugal won for the second time on June 8.

He explained, “We didn’t talk about this competition during our matches. In June, it’s always challenging to maintain focus and intensity, but this was different. We had the opportunity to win an international title, which is not the end of the season. The players were keen to play and compete in the Club World Cup.”

Martínez went on to commend the growth of nearly 20 players from the national team participating in the tournament, particularly praising Costa for his strong performance with Juventus. “It’s interesting to see almost 20 players from our selection in the Club World Cup, and players like [Alberto] Costa are delivering impressive performances,” he stated.

When asked about potential contenders for the Club World Cup title, Martínez indicated that the tournament is just beginning with the group stage and knockout rounds. He noted, “European teams are improving, and the Brazilian teams started very well. Those that can adapt to the climatic conditions will be decisive,” while also recognizing the quality of teams like Manchester City and Bayern Munich.

Looking ahead to the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Martínez acknowledged the importance of preparing well. “We need to qualify, and we will have three critical stages with six matches. It’s an opportunity to assess training centers, stadiums, and climatic conditions, which we can leverage,” he emphasized.

Finally, Martínez underscored the psychological benefits of winning the Nations League, especially after facing a formidable team like Germany. “It was vital; there is a significant psychological aspect to facing such teams. We are a winning team with the mentality to show personality against anyone. The psychological aspect was our greatest achievement,” he highlighted.

The Club World Cup matches are available live and free on DAZN.

Overall, this interview reflects a hopeful insight into the Portuguese national team’s future and potential as it prepares for upcoming challenges on the international stage.
