Martavis Bryant Makes NFL Comeback: Can He Secure a Spot on the Commanders?

The Washington Commanders have officially signed receiver Martavis Bryant, marking his return to the NFL after six years, following a challenging journey through minor leagues. Standing at 6-foot-4, Bryant provides the Commanders with a size advantage they currently lack in their receiving lineup.

Bryant’s last NFL appearance was in 2018, as he was suspended indefinitely due to drug use and was only reinstated in November 2023. To accommodate his signing, the Commanders released kicker Ramiz Ahmed. Head Coach Dan Quinn, who previously worked with Bryant in Dallas while he was on the Cowboys’ practice squad, expressed enthusiasm about the receiver’s fitness and eagerness to prove himself.

During his three seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2014 to 2018, Bryant recorded 126 receptions and 17 touchdowns. His career was marred by a suspension in 2016 for violating the substance abuse policy, and he was unable to play in the NFL again until this year. Following his release from the Steelers, he had brief tenures with the Raiders, CFL teams, and played in various indoor and alternative leagues.

Bryant shared his determination to seize this opportunity, stating he was focused on being both physically and mentally prepared. He is reported to weigh 208 pounds after losing 22 pounds since last season, but faces tough competition for a place on the final roster, as the Commanders boast established receivers such as Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson, and rookie Luke McCaffrey, among others.

Teammate Terry McLaurin noted Bryant’s impressive physical attributes, emphasizing the importance of readiness for the opportunity ahead. As the Commanders evaluate their roster, Bryant remains optimistic and motivated to showcase his skills.
