The Miami Marlins have announced the promotion of Gabe Kapler from assistant general manager to general manager, a significant move for the organization as they aim to enhance their baseball operations. This promotion positions Kapler as the club’s second-highest executive in the baseball operations hierarchy, reporting directly to president of baseball operations Peter Bendix.
Additionally, the Marlins revealed that Frankie Piliere has been named vice president of amateur forecasting and player evaluation initiatives, while Vinesh Kanthan has been elevated to senior director of baseball operations. Bendix expressed confidence in the trio, highlighting their contributions and the values they embody, which focus on innovation, a forward-thinking approach, and teamwork.
Kapler, 50, has a solid background in baseball, having spent the last two years as the assistant GM for the Marlins. His previous experience includes playing 12 seasons in Major League Baseball as an outfielder, notably with the Tampa Bay Rays, during which time he worked alongside Bendix. Following his playing career, Kapler managed the Philadelphia Phillies from 2018 to 2019 and the San Francisco Giants from 2020 to 2023. His managerial tenure saw him achieve a record of 456 wins to 411 losses, and in 2021, he led the Giants to an impressive 107 wins and a National League West title.
In his new role, Kapler expressed enthusiasm for continuing the progress made by the Marlins, emphasizing the team’s clear vision and strong culture. He acknowledged the importance of collaboration within the organization as they work towards their goals.
The Marlins are looking to improve after suffering losing seasons in four of the last five years. However, they showed signs of progress in 2025 by increasing their win total by 17 games compared to their 100-loss season in 2024. As the offseason approaches, the team faces critical decisions, particularly regarding the future of star pitcher Sandy Alcantara. The Marlins’ leadership changes could signal a renewed focus on building a competitive team that fans can rally behind in the coming seasons.
