Mark Johnson, the former long-standing meteorologist at Channel 5, has secured a new position after his abrupt departure in May. He will now provide weather forecasts for TEGNA, the parent company of WKYC, although he will not be working within the Cleveland market due to contractual restrictions. Johnson shared with Cleveland Scene that he will be doing freelance work for the TEGNA Company, specifically during the summer months for various TV stations outside Northern Ohio.
Johnson was let go from Channel 5 on May 9, with the station announcing the staffing change but not disclosing the reasons behind his termination. WEWS Vice President and General Manager, Steve Weinstein, emphasized the station’s commitment to maintaining high ethical standards and mentioned that further details could not be provided as it was a personnel matter. In response, Johnson’s attorney expressed disappointment over the firing, labeling it as “unfounded.” The attorney, Daniel Levin, who has represented Johnson for over 25 years, defended Johnson’s professional integrity and reputation, highlighting his exemplary performance and dedication.
Following Johnson’s exit, Channel 5 appointed Frank Marzullo to take over his position. Johnson, who joined News 5 Cleveland in 1993 and earned Emmy Awards for his weather forecasting, has a degree from Kent State University.
This transition marks a new chapter for Johnson, who has been a trusted figure in the meteorological community for over three decades. As he steps into this new role with TEGNA, there is optimism about his contributions to weather forecasting in other regions, leveraging his extensive experience and reputation.
