Marisa Abela, the 29-year-old British actress known for her role on HBO’s “Industry,” is currently in remission from thyroid cancer, a condition she bravely battled after her diagnosis in 2020. In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, Abela shared her experiences and ongoing health management post-diagnosis.
“I’m all in the clear now, thank God,” she expressed, detailing her continued need for medication and regular check-ups to manage her health. Despite her remission, Abela explained that she no longer has a functioning thyroid and relies on medication to replicate its function. She emphasized the importance of monitoring her hormone levels, particularly as a woman, to ensure her overall well-being.
Abela’s journey began when she was just 23 years old. A routine doctor’s visit led to the discovery of a lump on her neck, coinciding with feelings of unexplained fatigue. Following her diagnosis, she underwent an extensive eight-hour surgery to remove the tumor and subsequently received radioactive iodine treatment.
The impact of her health challenges significantly affected her perspective on her career. She candidly recalled moments after surgery when she feared her acting days were over due to the visible scars from her operation. “When I first went to the bathroom after surgery and I saw myself in the mirror, I thought, ‘That’s it, my career is over,’” she recounted, noting the tears and doubts that accompanied her recovery process.
Abela’s experience led to a deeper awareness of her body and her health. She articulated a transformation in her relationship with her physical self, impacted by the reality of having a disease that went undetected for years. “There’s a distrust within your body that I really wouldn’t wish on anyone,” she noted, reflecting on how her diagnosis reshaped her understanding of life’s priorities.
In addition to her personal challenges, Abela continues to portray Yasmin Kara-Hanani in “Industry,” a drama that depicts the fierce competition among recent graduates vying for lucrative positions at a fictional London investment bank. The fourth season of “Industry” is set to premiere on January 11, providing fans with new episodes to look forward to.
Abela’s journey showcases resilience and determination, serving as an inspiration for many facing similar challenges. Her story underscores the importance of health awareness and the strength to continue pursuing one’s dreams despite life’s unexpected hurdles.
