As the Washington Commanders gear up for the final game of a challenging season marred by injuries, uncertainty surrounds their quarterback situation once again. Head Coach Dan Quinn announced that Marcus Mariota did not take part in a light jog-through on Monday, casting doubt on his availability for Sunday’s season-ending matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. Mariota has been dealing with hand and quadriceps injuries sustained during their last encounter with the Eagles, a 29-18 defeat at home on December 20. His quad injury has been particularly troublesome, forcing him to forgo Thursday’s 30-23 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

“Given his current status, it would be a stretch for him to be ready,” Quinn remarked about Mariota’s potential participation. However, he remains optimistic about Mariota’s improvement this week, hoping to gauge his mobility in practice. Quinn stated that if Mariota can demonstrate he is back to his usual self, there is a real chance he could play.

With Mariota’s status still unclear, third-string quarterback Josh Johnson is set to start if Mariota cannot go. The intrigue lies in who might back him up—either Jeff Driskel or Sam Hartman. While the Commanders sit at a disappointing 4-12 record with little to gain from the game, Mariota has personal stakes to consider, as he is looking at becoming an unrestricted free agent.

In the face of adversity, Mariota has stepped up, starting eight games and coming in for three more this season, often without key offensive players like wide receivers Terry McLaurin and Noah Brown. Although his completion rate stands at 61.2 percent, ranking him 27th among quarterbacks, he has averaged 7.5 yards per attempt and shown effectiveness as a runner – characteristics that could make him a valuable asset for the Commanders going forward.

The upcoming game also presents an opportunity for younger players to gain experience, even as Quinn indicated that he does not plan to rest healthy players despite the season’s low stakes. He emphasized that competition and player development remain paramount. Notable performances from young players such as Jer’Zhan Newton, who recorded nine tackles and three sacks against Dallas, highlight the potential for breakout moments.

In terms of injuries, center Tyler Biadasz has avoided the need for surgery on his right knee and ankle, although Quinn stated that it would be difficult for him to make a return for Sunday’s game. Nick Allegretti is expected to fill in at center, while seasoned players like Andrew Wylie and Brandon Coleman could also play pivotal roles on the offensive line.

As the Commanders wrap up their tumultuous season, the focus will remain not only on the players currently on the field but also on what lies ahead—potentially a chance to reset, reflect, and regroup for the future. This finale could pave the way for new talent and fresh beginnings as they look to build on lessons learned over a trying year.
