The Seattle Mariners have made a significant roster decision by reinstating right-hander Collin Snider from the 15-day injured list, only to subsequently designate him for assignment. This move creates space on the 40-man roster for newly acquired left-hander Caleb Ferguson, as reported earlier today based on a confirmed trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Collin Snider, 29, was previously claimed off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks ahead of the 2024 season. He showcased impressive performance for the Mariners last year, accumulating 41 2/3 innings with a commendable 1.94 earned run average and a striking rate of 27.8% against batters, coupled with a low walk rate of 7.7%.
Unfortunately, this season has presented challenges for Snider. He recorded a 5.47 ERA in 26 1/3 innings before landing on the injured list in June due to a right forearm flexor strain. Although he began a rehab assignment in July, his performance did not improve, as he posted a 5.06 ERA in 10 2/3 innings while in Triple-A.
Currently, Snider is out of options and would need to be reinstated to the active roster after his rehab. However, indications suggest that the Mariners do not plan to retain him in their bullpen. Instead, they have already integrated Ferguson and are expected to continue enhancing their relief options, thus leaving Snider in a precarious position.
Now facing a stint in DFA limbo, the Mariners have a 23-hour window to potentially trade Snider. Should no trade occur, he will clear waivers. Despite his challenges this season, there is hope that his proven success from last year could attract interest from other teams.
The situation highlights the ever-changing dynamics of major league rosters and the potential for players to find new opportunities despite setbacks.
