The Seattle Mariners have made a significant roster move by recalling outfielder Dominic Canzone from Triple-A Tacoma while designating outfielder Leody Taveras for assignment. This decision was announced by Justin Hollander, the Mariners’ Executive Vice President and General Manager of Baseball Operations.
Dominic Canzone, who is 27 years old, has made a couple of appearances for the Mariners earlier this season, with his last game played on April 9 against the Houston Astros. His performance in 45 games at Triple-A Tacoma has been impressive, where he has compiled a .296 batting average (53 hits out of 179 at-bats), scored 35 runs, hit 9 doubles, and recorded 13 home runs — the highest number for any player on the Rainiers this season. Canzone’s on-base plus slugging (OPS) stands at an impressive .925, highlighting his offensive contributions. Since being acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 31, 2023, he has played 128 Major League games, demonstrating potential with a total of 20 doubles and 14 home runs.
On the other hand, Leody Taveras, 26, who had been claimed off waivers from Texas, saw action in 26 games with the Mariners this season but struggled significantly at the plate, hitting just .174 (16 hits in 92 at-bats). His overall batting average across the two teams this season is .205, which included 6 doubles and 3 home runs.
Taveras is a well-experienced player in the Major Leagues, with a career batting average of .236 over six seasons, reflecting a blend of skill and struggles throughout his time in the field.
This roster adjustment indicates the Mariners’ strategy to enhance their batting lineup with Canzone’s recent success and aim for a stronger performance as the season progresses.
Such moves are not uncommon in professional baseball as teams continuously seek to balance their rosters for better results. Fans and analysts alike will be eagerly watching Canzone’s return to Major League action and hoping that he can find success at this level.
